# How do I update Poetic to a new version?

Update to the latest version of Poetic without losing your settings.

When a new version of Poetic is out, Shopify shows an update notice on the theme in **Online Store > Themes**.

### 1. Add the update

1. In your Shopify admin, go to **Online Store > Themes**.
2. Find Poetic and follow the update notice to add the new version.
3. Shopify adds the updated theme to your theme library as a new copy. It isn't published yet, so your live store doesn't change.

### 2. What carries over

* **Carries over:** Everything you set in the theme editor, including sections, blocks, theme settings, and any **Custom CSS** or **Custom Liquid** you entered in the editor.
* **Doesn't carry over:** Changes made in the code editor (**Edit code**), such as edited or added files.

### 3. Check and publish

1. Preview the new copy and check your key pages: home, product, collection and cart.
2. If you made changes in the code editor, re-apply them to the new copy.
3. When you're happy, click **Publish** on the new copy.

**Note:** Keep your old version in the theme library for a while as a backup. If something doesn't look right, you can publish it again.
